DENTAL UPDATE

I had my follow up dental appointment yesterday and I’m happy to report that all looks good! The canine incision is the one they were most concerned with, but it’s healing nicely and the others have stitches that should fall out soon.

I want to talk about dental hygiene real quick…just because your furry friends may not be showing signs of dental discomfort, it doesn’t mean that they aren’t experiencing some pain . We animals have a good way of hiding our emotions. Things that might indicate dental/gum issues include a change in eating habits or pawing at the mouth. If you notice these or any other oddities, contact your vet.

Since we don’t know that we have to care for our teeth, you need to help us. Brushing is probably the best approach (with animal specific toothpaste), but let’s face it….you may get a claw to the face or a chomp on the hand if they aren’t used to it. It’s best to start this routine as a kitten or puppy. If you can’t do that, you can feed us dental treats and let us have chew toys and there are even some water additives to help remove plaque and tartar.
